The problem is that you don't tell us on what basis they would be the best existing band. Your review seems permeated with the "they're cool for some reason..." which honestly doesn't convince me. Secondly, U2 has done great things in the past, but now they are diluted in the syrup. It's all too polished, perfect, cold. For that, maybe, they get labeled as bechstritbois. And let me say that listening to "from Nirvana to the Beatles, from Queen to Oasis (oh my God!), from Iron Maiden to Dream Theater (oh my God again!), from Led Zeppelin to The Who" is not enough to declare the best existing band. Those are basic listens (some, of course, are essential) for approaching music. Then there are a thousand other things after that. And to be honest, U2 are not among those thousand things.

Since it is encyclopedic, it’s a sort of summary of everything that the eels have been in the past (I think you know them, so you shouldn't have any problems...). Nothing particularly new, probably, but in an operation like this, I don't think that matters. Indeed, it might even be out of place...
