Well, but the Mercury Rev came later... Dester's is from '98 or '99, I believe... I can agree on Van Dyke Parks because he remains one of the great eccentrics of all time in arrangements. However, from my point of view, his approach is, to quote Easy Cure, a brilliant yet "stylish exercise" from a supreme studio expert. Spontaneity, for me, is the key reason I mentioned those influences...
