For me, every decade has had its psychedelic "mad diamonds": Barrett in the '60s, Ayers in the '70s, Julian Cope and Robyn Hitchcock in the '80s, and Dogbowl and maybe Kramer in the '90s... and in the 2000s...??

Well, but the Mercury Rev came later... Dester's is from '98 or '99, I believe... I can agree on Van Dyke Parks because he remains one of the great eccentrics of all time in arrangements. However, from my point of view, his approach is, to quote Easy Cure, a brilliant yet "stylish exercise" from a supreme studio expert. Spontaneity, for me, is the key reason I mentioned those influences...
