The twilight of the Western genre is also, in my opinion, due to the catastrophic consequences of Heaven's Gate by Cimino. After that, no one dared to pitch Westerns to the majors; Kevin Costner struggled for years to find someone willing to believe in Dances with Wolves, and he got lucky because it appeals to an easily pleased audience.
