I wanted to clarify, Bonnie, that I’m speaking to you as someone who is not a progressive fan with rose-colored glasses. I listen to almost everything—I say almost because I also have my dislikes, as is human. And I repeat, regarding bands like ELP, you are right; I don’t even like Emerson, as he’s so dominating in the compositions of ELP. Prog was a complex genre that could easily slip into tastelessness and self-indulgent style exercises.

Bonnie, when it comes to progressive, you're right, but it seems you only know that. I repeat, prog has many nuances; you have a very superficial view of prog given the meager list of bands you've mentioned. Prog is not just Genesis, Yes, ELP, and the like. It’s much more than that, not to mention that today's electronics are the offspring of cosmic progressive rock from the early '70s, as Mr. Know-It-All, Mr. Sympathy, Ghemison pointed out. Furthermore, it's true that Bach and Beethoven were already there, but rock has blended with many more "noble" genres; why shouldn’t it have done so with classical? Progressive was cultured music, for the mind, to counter rock in the classical sense of the term. There’s no discussion on that; it seems clear to me. I repeat, prog is many things, not just the most famous bands you mentioned or Dream Theater, which have nothing to do with the original prog.

Well, just click on my nickname to realize how much I love the vdgg :-) I agree, Lake is one of my favorite voices, but I have one note to make, and it's the same that they also say about Jon Anderson, but not me. I mean, sometimes he can be a bit monotone. But voices are subjective, depending on how you perceive them. Have a great weekend; I bid farewell to this pleasant conversation :-)

Exactly, take that, garishness!:-) but yes, long live Van der Graaf Generator, one of the most measured and refined, moving and unusual prog bands! I will never tire of praising them!

Yes, close to the edge is superior in my opinion too... just the namesake suite drives me crazy even now... when I listen to "iget i get down," when everything calms down and you can hear the drops of water... unforgettable musical moments.

and then let's stop generalizing, there’s prog and there’s prog. Progressive has many nuances and often has little to do with rock. I can agree with you on some baroque and paradoxical aspects like certain things from ELP or other groups, as well as some of the Italian prog, which I find unbearable for being so pompous. But let’s not generalize, okay? No polemics or resentment, of course :-)

bonny91, I didn't expect this kind of generalization and commonplaces about prog from you. You'd be better off just saying that you don't like it, plain and simple. King Crimson tacky?? Van der Graaf tacky?? Please! Every music genre has its gems and masterpieces, as well as its kitsch moments. Welcome to the festival of clichés, I would say, but you're very young, so you’re forgiven. A speech like that from a 30-year-old would be intolerable and deserving of a jam session of raspberries.
