The 3 films by Hitchcock that dismantled and reinvented Horror and Thriller cinema are "Psycho," "The Birds," "Rear Window"... and if we want, I would also include "Vertigo" and "The Woman Who Lived Twice," a truly distressing film, in the purest sense of the word... North by Northwest is instead a bit more fussy, conventional, if one can speak of convention when discussing a director who broke and reinvented the standards of cinema, alongside Chaplin, Kubrick, Welles... and I would add Sergio Leone too :-)))

NEU... excuse me, but is it my fault that I "listen to the voice"?? For me, this is music, dear.....VOICE, Instruments...for me, Garrard could even mention the formation of Juventus in the league in lyrics that I frankly don't care about: her voice is wonderful!!! Germano's is more ordinary. And to stay on the theme of women, then Suzanne Vega, Byrd York, Tori Amos are light-years ahead, excuse me, but that's how it is... that you consider her the best in this infamous world makes me happy.... but stop right there!
You have given the most incorrect concept one could about Pop. Mick Jagger would shiver!! You have given the definition of ROCK, my dear novice Fegiz..... that's the genesis and syntax of Rock... Do you know what Jagger replied to the famous question??? About what he considered Pop???
Frank Sinatra!!!! Bing Crosby! Tom Jones, Dean Martin....etc....etc..... That was (today I would say Robbie Williams, Bublè) POP!!!! Get it into your head... you have to study, boy, and a lot...

I don't agree, sorry... I don't understand where you want to go with this... I was listening to Warhol's banana on vinyl at 17, along with another 10,000 bands... Yes, okay, I liked VU, but not more than a thousand others.... As for Metal, I don't believe a "metalhead" (??!! do they still exist?) with a sane mind judges a Metal album according to the parameters of Metal..., but according to his own!! I recently met a guy who's 15 years younger than me and who hates all Power/classic Metal.... For him, Iron Maiden are just a bunch of posers!!! :-)) I, on the other hand, adore them.... just as I love Progressive metal (being a fan of progressive rock), I love Gothic Metal, I'm discovering wonderful Bands that do metal/folk, neoclassical metal and more.... As you can see, Lux, even within Metal there are infinite variations.... that often are almost antithetical to each other and to the same genre! Saying classic Metal is as laughable as saying Neoclassical metal!!! Or Symphonic/Baroque metal!!! For example, to the mentioned prepubescent (compared to me), for him Metal is only Brutal/Death/Grind/Black..... see, we’re back in a vicious circle :-)))

As for the rest, Italian music during that period "lifted its head"... and I would say a lot... I'm thinking of Battiato's Quadrilogy (Fetus, Pollution, Sulle corde di Aries, clic), Battisti’s "anima latina" and as Richard Benson says, in his usual way: LE ORMEEEEEEEEEEE, LE ORMEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, LE ORMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE (grunt)... then I could continue with "opus avantra", "De De Lind", "Museo Rosenbach", "Osanna", "Balletto di Bronzo", "Planetarium" (the album Infinity is a gem that still surprises today with its stylistic solutions), "Circus2000", etc... When Italy was giving lessons in music to the world... I much prefer certain Italian albums to some works by Genesis or Yes....

Look, if I told you who I'm a fan of, we would keep going until tomorrow, so many and such are the bands I love, including the Doors... oh yeah, Vasco too... but the one from back in the day... Ligabue is just a wannabe compared to that.

Lux, let's be clear, those who love the VU are usually those who later loved New Wave, Post Punk, and Dark.... One cannot and should not generalize! They may be a myth, as you have rightly pointed out, for a certain "class" of users, but not for everyone.... For those who have always loved progressive rock, symphonic, or Art Rock... they don't think of the VU.... And certainly not those who love Hard Rock-metal... how many bands were there at the time that didn't even achieve the success of the Velvets? Bands that often confronted (sometimes inventing) genres that were only codified a decade later.... Think of "electric Prunes," "Seeds," "Moby Grape," the same "Byrds," "Cream," "Kinks"... and I could go on.... The VU only combined Psychedelia with the Acid Rock of the West Coast and with decadent lyrics inspired not by the "beat" of Kerouac, so to speak, but more by Orwell or Aldous Huxley—more decadent.... The Velvets loved heroin, while others loved LSD.... Two different drugs for two different "Weltanschauungen"... that's all.

Neu... unlike you, I grew up with Music, with all music, from Emerson, Lake & Palmer to Porcupine Tree... music is emotions, it's subjective... but maybe you are too young to understand... Lisa Germano? I've listened to her, but I much prefer another Lisa: Lisa Gerrard!
Don't provoke me, because it's not in your best interest... I have 2000 CDs that I listen to every minute of my day, ranging from classical to avant-garde, so... you see...
There is one thing I hate in life: intellectuals... I don't care if an idiot like Scaruffi says that the Beatles and David Bowie are crap and then goes on to praise Madonna... already this should make many think, shame that in Italy we’ve lost the habit of thinking... A guy who praises Red Crayola, who are among the worst the West Coast offered in the magical three-year period 1966-1969... Come on, let’s not blaspheme: but have you ever listened to "Volunteers," "Crown Of Creation," or "Surrealistic Pillow" by Jefferson Airplane?? "The Notorious Byrd Brothers," "Younger Than Yesterday" by The Byrds? "Aoxomoxoa" by the Dead?
And to go back to England: "The Who Sell Out" by The Who, "The Piper" by the Floyd? "Disraeli Gears" by the Cream? Then I could go on with "Seeds," "Standells," "Electric Prunes," "Moby Grape," "Chocolate Watchband"....... and millions of others....
Then on the Pop side... by the way, you who are so knowledgeable, do you know what Pop means? Give me a definition? They asked Mick Jagger 35 years ago and he gave a disarming answer in its obviousness and correctness.... on the pop side, I was saying the Beatles produced two essential gems which are the White Album and Abbey Road! I mean, let me understand according to your great expert opinion, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," the frantic (and I would dare say quite innovative, at least for the Beatles) "Helter Skelter," the beautiful "Blackbird" are garbage? That masterpiece (taken from Revolver) "Eleanor Rigby" (which anticipates symphonic rock by a couple of years) is crap? "Something," "Because," "Come Together" are trash... no, because if that's the case I recommend an excellent ear, nose and throat doctor... I know one :-))
Then, I would like the usual intellectual debate=beautiful to end... Have you listened to "A Rainbow in Curved Air" by Riley?? The "In C" by Steve Reich? I have!! and they are considered two of the masterpieces of the avant-garde of the last 50 years... After 5 minutes, excuse me so much, but I prefer to detoxify with a nice vintage David Bowie or with the Floyd... or even with Battisti or Bertè!!! Please......

Well said, Michele... Perhaps on a cultural level, metalheads established their identity during the NWOBHM, but their mindset was shaped earlier...
