I am reminded of a scene from "Radio Days" by Woody Allen, the one where little Joe's family is gathered around the radio and is emotionally engaged by the live coverage of a little girl who fell into a well.

And then this is a work in which there is the dynamism of time, starting in 1981 and continuing year after year, '82, '83, and so on.

Better an open ending than a series that drags on endlessly, like Dylan Dog, Julia, Tex... great products but after a while they need to come to an end.

It seems to me that at the time it wasn't a great success.

Well, in the end, Ataru proves his love for Lum; she wanted him to declare it, but the fact that he shows her his feelings, something he has done before in less showy ways, is proof that he has always cared deeply for her affection.

If you have a huge success.... you try to make it last as long as possible, and that's a limit. But in my opinion, they have a quite reasonable duration, even though in the case of Lamù the ending is open.

Of Ranma, I only know the TV series, and once I considered it incredible and brilliant for its ability to naturally incorporate many millennia-old Eastern traditions into a light-hearted and jovial context. Then I read Urusei Yatsura and understood everything. Ranma is a rehash of that formula, so the original is much better. Moreover, Ranma is a longer work, 57 volumes if I’m not mistaken, so it's more likely to repeat certain patterns. Urusei Yatsura is his most successful work, with 48 beautiful volumes rich in creativity and consistently spot-on stories. Maison Ikkoku is more of a novel in comic form; it’s very beautiful and absolutely deserves to be read, with only 27 chapters.
