Blair Witch was a very clever commercial operation: Cannibal Holocaust clearly inspired this film, it follows the same outline. Blair Witch Project was then launched as an URBAN LEGEND, greatly aided by the internet. Cannibal Holocaust, on the other hand, was presented by its director as a film in its own right and not as a true story, a gesture of honesty that is commendable. The biggest and most important difference is that "Cannibal Holocaust" succeeds in its aim of disgusting the viewer, while "Blair Witch Project" completely misses its objective: to scare them. And as an injustice, we see Blair being praised by everyone while Cannibal remains a cult film for a chosen few. And let's remember, Cannibal in 1979, Blair in 2000.

I also feel the need to defend the underground, especially the Italian one. Guys, established directors today like Tarantino have stated that they were inspired by that type of cinema, by directors like Lenzi, Bava, Deodato. I mean, watch Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, and then watch Bava’s Cani Arrabbiati from 1974, you’ll understand for yourselves. It's cinema that opened many doors and inspired those who are now considered sacred monsters. And what about the rape and revenge genre? That’s all stuff you definitely can’t find today; that scene was pure gold. Films like L’Ultimo Tram della Notte are a hundred times more terrifying than an innocuous Wes Craven. We Italians set the standard even in filmed violence.

Well, personal opinion anyway, Cavallone is considered a cult director by many, and works like Spell or Blue Movie are respected by a certain audience. Cavallone is an author that should be rediscovered. Regarding the relevance to the horror genre, a film like Spell falls within that extreme niche that was popular in Italy in the 70s, just like Salò. I repeat, more than talking about horror, I talk about disturbing and extreme films that combine horror, splatter, gore, violence, extreme sex, and blasphemy – a niche for connoisseurs (certainly not for people who praise Carpenter). So, Spell definitely fits into what I want to express; it certainly does not belong in lists where Carpenter and Craven reign supreme. Anyway, I do like Kubrick, eh; even the last, Eyes Wide Shut, I find great. My message is just this: "Shining is not the greatest disturbing film of all time."

Your list is interesting, Burns, even though I don't agree on some points. Let's try to summarize: Nekromantik (I agree, an absolutely sick film by the German master) - Vampyr (I don't know it) - The Thing (is that Carpenter's?? Carpenter might be the most overrated director in so-called horror; there isn't a minute in his entire filmography that genuinely chills the blood) - Schramm (I agree, Buttgereit is a confirmation) - Inseparables (it fits in the category, I mean, if The Shining is in there, this masterpiece can be too) - Gemini (I don't know it) - Suspiria (beautiful in terms of visuals, which are very refined and reference German expressionism, but the story, for me, doesn't hold up) - La casa delle finestre che ridono (the only one by Avati worth remembering, well, it can fit) - Buio Omega (a seriously sick and forgotten film) - Aftermath (I need to get this one) - Santa Sangre (I don't know, Jodorowsky doesn't really fit in horror; it's an interesting mix of genres, I hate the horror label too) - Guinea Pig 1 and 2 (mind-blowing, at least these first two in the series, strong stuff, much more than Carpenter) - Naked Blood (I don't know it) - Society (a fundamental pillar of splatter) - Rosemary's Baby (historic) - Fire Walk with Me (Lynch is untouchable, much more than just a simple horror, at this point, Lost Highway should be included) - Men Behind the Sun (revolting and perhaps a bit deliberately graphic) - The Addiction (a masterpiece by Ferrara) - Spell, Sweet Slaughterhouse (I need to find it but haven't found any copies so far) - Salò (again, the discussion about what the horror genre is; Salò is also horror but a thousand other things, a disturbing and devastating masterpiece) - Cannibal Holocaust (same discussion as Salò).
