"My dad advised me to put that in the walkman so I wouldn't ruin the heads with my old hyper-recorded cassettes".... Your father had many great ideas.... you know that?

Paradoxically, I can testify that I have met several girls who are fond of that low genre... Well, incredibly (besides the ballads of all heavy bands, obviously...), I've noticed that some episodes from Tool and Pain of Salvation are highly appreciated... So could it be that the problem is cultural???? Who knows... as Descartes would say... we should rebuild our brains! :-)))

Absolutely true... I completely agree with you... Even more so when you think that an artist like Gigi D'Alessio has managed to sell over 6 million copies. It should be noted that people with elementary tastes enjoy banality... However, I really can't wrap my head around how pseudo-artists who indulge in clichés, predictability, and flatness can receive so much support... If you think about it, even Pink Floyd, in their early alternative works, didn't enjoy that kind of global consensus (The Wall is an immense WORK like few others, but allow me to say, with commercial undertones... and I'm talking about one of my records to which I feel most attached.... I was born on the same day that record was released, just for the record!); the same could be said about Tool... I hope they don't commercialize themselves because despite their uniqueness, they've already secured their place in the history of rock. In any case, I can even tolerate the mainstream support of "business merchants" like Robbie Williams, Oasis, or Muse, but that of characters like Gigi D'Alessio or Laura Pausini? Absolutely NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Sorry Dave, but I must admit that I consider you a bit of an integralist based on the speeches you make. Muse is a band that enjoys a broad consensus, so I see them as great just like I might consider Radiohead or Oasis great; from a, let's say, "secular" point of view!!!! Obviously, the comparison with Tool is only from an associative perspective (meaning that both have contributed to inspiring part of Octavairum). Beyond that, however, the two groups have nothing in common. Personally, I believe Tool is one of the greatest bands in the history of rock (comparable to the "classics", indeed..), while I consider Muse a "great" band from a very different perspective... from the perspective of Sunday morning music, in short!!!!! Got it? This doesn’t mean that I don’t like them; sure, they don’t drive me wild, but I don’t mind listening to them. Of course, it’s logical that the spirit with which I listen to Black Hole and Revelations is a bit different from the one with which I can listen to albums like Selling England By The Pound, or BE, or Lateralus.... To make a female comparison: Amber is not the same as Cameron Diaz......!! :-))

Sure, the fact that they are considered a great contemporary band doesn’t mean that I like them or that they should be compared to our sacred monsters.... They are two different things, don’t you think?

Yes Dave, even Portnoy himself stated it in an interview. He mentioned this inspiration, particularly in the composition of track 9 from the album Octavarium. Regarding the line between Prog Metal and Prog Rock, we should say that IQ does Neo Prog, Pink Floyd does Psychedelic/Space Prog, DT does Progressive Metal, etc. Come on...!!!!!

Forgive my disjointedness as well, but I send this without rereading what I write. After all, more than the way of writing, what matters here is the content...! :-)))

Well, there doesn't seem to be much to discuss about the originality of Pain of Salvation and Tool... In fact, if I may say so, the only "niche" band that deserves a place in the history of rock, in my opinion, is Tool. A niche band, sure, but if you think that despite everything they have sold over 10,000,000 copies, then you can understand that despite their uniqueness, they have certainly written more than a few notable entries in the grand book of rock...

Of course, I refrain from the controversy surrounding Dream Theater. Despite everything, they have personalized their prog a lot, and so I consider them to be a valid group. Sure, the influences of the "classics" are heavily felt, especially in their works, but beyond that, their compositions are very high quality. Additionally, it's worth noting that their influences are much broader than the previously mentioned bands. Not only do DT clearly draw from Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, and Led Zeppelin, but in their recent albums (notably Octavarium), the “inspiration” from major contemporary bands is heavily apparent: Muse and Tool stand out in particular. In short, it’s not the usual prog, but a "contaminated" prog, which is always better than a drastic emulation that adds nothing to what has already been said...
