Disappointment for me. What I liked the least about Kurosawa, among the films I've seen (and I can't give less than 5 to any of them, especially Vivere and Barbarossa). The ending with the priest reciting "you have restored my faith and hope, thank you" (???) evoked the same sensation as when chalk scrapes against a blackboard. I found it forced and overly concentrated, conceptually rather linear, despite the Pirandellian references (everyone wants to cover their own ass, while the lumberjack has seen everything and tells the truth to the present, omitting only, of course, the detail of the stolen dagger). It didn’t convey tension to me (too linear, indeed... I expected multiple interpretations of the events narrated), but above all it didn’t convey humanity to me (a serious flaw, for a Kurosawa film, I believe). Mifune was extraordinary, as always.

Insipid album... this is probably one of those I call "one album bands"... that is, after the first excellent album (Socialismo Tascabile) comes nothing, or almost nothing.

Great Pere Ubu is... but this definitely not...

"The album as a whole conveys to me the feeling of a sort of dark magma advancing inexorably and hyper-accelerated." A sensation that Neurosis (to name the first that come to mind) evoked in '96 with very different results. Personally, unbearable.
