Nice review of a film that, well, didn't deserve it.

Suonoonous: putting aside Sorrentino the man (likable-unlikable, little man-great man: who cares?!?) who has nothing to do with the work and judging only The Great Beauty, in my view, it does not belittle, it does not stigmatize, it does not highlight, it does not put at the center "the man who falls." The story of J Gambardella seems to me to be merely a pretext to make an apocalyptic fresco of Rome at the end of the empire. It is society, the entire society, that Sorrentino sees falling. An avalanche of crap: money, sex, parties, appearances, whores, drugs, death, decay, showgirls, soccer, screams, plastic surgery, corrupt clergy, useless and boorish gossip... there are countless themes touched upon by Sorrentino. And hidden, in the background, now and then, through the altered and shrill music from the nightclub (which indeed serves the film!), through dreamy flashbacks, a melancholic hope and an almost religious breath re-emerge fleetingly. In short, it is certainly not a film to be sliced like a piece of salami: "what nonsense... after ten minutes I fell asleep!!" "what the hell do you mean?" "at the cinema, what a nice nap" "Berlusconi bought the Oscar for this crap of signatures" "but does it even have a plot? I didn't understand shit!" "what idiots!!!! Slow and plotless!!!" All these comments are a glaring demonstration that Sorrentino has nailed the film perfectly.

I fully agree with the reviewer. Echoing some of the judgments mentioned above, it seems evident that this film was not well understood, or rather, people expected something that it was not and did not want to be. It is decadent, it is aesthetic, it is virtuous, it is artistic, it is visionary, it is fairy-tale-like, it is only appearance as it intended to be. It was a huge mistake to show it at 9:00 PM on Canale 5. Obviously, the masses didn’t grasp much of it. But the light, the camera movements, the 10-second interludes that seem incongruous, the slowness, the Roman-ness, the ugliness of a broken body... who the hell has the crazy courage that Sorrentino has today? At least in Italy. Watching this film, I was reminded more of Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life (another film in my personal top ten of the decade) than of Fellini (a comparison as crude as a slice of mortadella: what does Fellini have to do with this, from a completely different world, from a completely different era, from a completely different poetry?). But above all, there is the denunciation of the mess that Italy has become. The Medusa and the Berlusconi entourage that partly produces this film and flaunts the Oscar does not realize (like our friend Hetzer), or rather is fully aware but pretends otherwise, that La Grande Bellezza would not exist without the twenty-year Berlusconi era, born from the ā€œdrinking Milanā€ and the ā€œfabulousā€ 80s of Reaganite hedonism. Sorrentino gilds a huge pile of shit. And don’t think that the Americans haven’t noticed. They awarded him precisely for this. And finally: can you tell me who today uses (movements, framing, lights...) the camera like Sorrentino does? He may be unlikable, but he is a great talent, no question about it. He has already made masterpieces; Il Divo, for example, is an amazing work and we still haven't realized it.

Listen to the record!!!! Dario Margeli - Buongiorno Fino A Quando Servo (videoclip ufficiale ) musica italiana Down with the slave masters!!!!! What a soundscape, Dario, now definitely Franco Battiato and the REM no but I can definitely hear Kraftwerk and the early Depeche Mode. And also a splash of Malgioglio.

I saw it again, alone, at home with a mega screen and Dolby surround, at night. A masterpiece, plain and simple. The most beautiful by Malick. Just that firstborn son, with his slightly off-kilter gaze, his upbringing, the suffering, the parents, it breaks the soul. Not to mention the whole universe that exists within.
