...I personally don't dislike this album; sure, it's not at the level of the first, but I wouldn't say it deserves a 2 either. You yourself said that they might deserve something more. In my opinion, a certain type of sound has become their trademark, with tracks like American Girls or Hard Candy almost having copyright, definitely traceable to their authors.
Anyway, they are a group of excellent musicians, full of personality, capable of composing great songs, and of reinterpreting some classics (like the cover of Friend of the Devil by the Dead) in a very personal way, giving that touch of "personality" or rather recognizability that makes them stand out.
