The Residents Meet The Residents

Anticipating a likely criticism, the peculiarity of Trout Mask Replica comes from the fact that the various instruments are not "synchronized," but the material itself is absolutely normal, at certain points even melodic. For this reason, I say that the freaks are very different from the early Residents (Meet the Residents -> Commercial).

If you think Manzoni "provoked just for the sake of it," I don't see how you can appreciate the Residents. The "shit" is a metaphor for artistic creation, which refers back to Manzoni's "containers" and "total space." The Residents are quite different from the various freaks precisely for this reason; they don’t manipulate what already exists, they create something entirely new and call it "art," even while using collages. It's the same process that transforms a urinal into a fountain, and more than expressionists, they are dada. And the mockery is continuous—holy shit, they made an album about Eskimos without knowing a damn thing about them, but narrating them in an almost documentary style. Just look at the videos to understand what the attitude of the Residents is (in my opinion, the videos are an integral part of the artistic production in this case, as important as the pieces themselves). The Beatles still have nothing to do with it; they could have chosen Monroe or the Stones, the point is that they used "famous faces" and drew over them precisely because they are unknown (and with no intention of becoming known). Not to be a pain in the ass, but shitting in a jar and signing it isn’t such a different process. Since he’s been going on about these shitty Bitols for three months, I thought I’d let him know that the Bitols have nothing to do with it.

What the hell the Beatles have to do with it, only you know; I really don't understand this need to attach anything to the "Beatles." The Residents are hardly explainable in words; in fact, I think their career is one joke after another, definitely outside of any "genre." Treat them as musical artist shit, if you want, and don't expect anything "melodic" or "avant-garde" (tout court).

Trout Mask Replica, for example, didn't have the same luck - but it’s a stupid argument because it's a much more difficult album, and the same goes for Sun Ra. There are plenty of albums across all eras that deserve recognition and haven’t gotten it, and it’s certainly true that some music has explored the insights of the VU with greater success. The point is that without the VU, they wouldn't have been able to do it. Your review had me grinning for hours, well done.

The review is very nice, but the album is a real drag like few others... They honestly seem like the poor man's Talk Talk to me.

I agree on the sacred cows, and I reiterate that it really gets under my skin when people vote twice to raise the average. Then I’ve already done my part for the Smashing Pumpkins (another sacred cow), for Radiohead I’ll pass.
