Kalmah The Black Waltz

Great band. This CD may not be a masterpiece, but it's damn engaging... and finally some variation. Am I perhaps the only band in this oversaturated genre that doesn’t copy (although some similarities do exist) Hatebreeder by CoB? Defeat, Time Takes Us All, and The Groan Of Wind are worth the price of admission. The vocals are also nice, finally stepping away from the typical scream of the genre.

Thank you for the appreciation. I would say that "friend" fits given the affinities. Yes, anyway, it's definitely the album of the year.

Yes, I knew about the one-man band. The only thing is your baroque style of writing. I prefer things that are much less emphatic. Anyway, hats off to you.

Good review even though I don't like the ostentation of pessimism, it feels too studied. The band is legendary and this album is nice, but PRELUDE TO MONOLITH is even better.

Paradise Lost Draconian Times

What can I say? I still love Bn to madness, and Draconian Times represents a peak for the band and the genre. It's impossible to mention all the emotions and messages that this album contains... truly a world apart that of Paradise Lost. The comparison with My Dying Bride or Anathema is inappropriate, although it's a trap that's easy to fall into. Even though they were categorized (at least in the early years) in the same genre, they are absolutely different bands in every way.

In response to Lethe: I can say that I agree with you. Over time, I’ve come to regard Draconian Times as the masterpiece of Paradise Lost in terms of overall quality... However, Gothic might be more appropriate to mention in this case, due to its significance. The problem with defining the ToT lies in the fact that the term Gothic Metal encompasses very different concepts within it.

I agree with what you said in your response, dear cptgaio. Regarding the Doom issue, yes, the ToT definitely have some Doom influence on this album. Also, because the term Gothic Metal is one of the broadest definitions ever coined and encompasses incredibly diverse elements, from Moonspell to ToT, passing through the Paradise Lost of "Draconian Times."

No problem, clarity first. Overrated because they are cited as the founders of Gothic Metal with dual vocals when 5 years before the release of this album, Paradise Lost with "Gothic" had already set the coordinates. They simply varied the style but essentially follow that path. Overrated because this album is referred to as a masterpiece when, in reality, it is just an excellent album; I’ve heard much better ones. Overrated because (and here I’m a bit harsh) I can't stand the all-pervasive use of the female voice... okay at times, but the script of the angel woman vs. beast man breaks down if overused (see also Draconian). Willing to discuss happily anyway.

Great review. Regarding the band, honestly, I'm a voice out of the chorus: in my opinion, they might be the most overrated group in the scene, and this work, while still a great piece of Gothic Metal (broadly speaking)...
