bukowskiana......you could have gone through San Siro (at the racetrack) and placed a nice bet on the most unlucky horse that was running.........
Charles Bukowski Pulp

I find it hard to rank Bukowski's works... I have a sentimental attachment to Ham on Rye (to be read before, after, or simultaneously with Death on Credit and Fante's Bandini trilogy) and to Notes of a Dirty Old Man (my first Bukowski at 14, by the pool on a hot July afternoon)... pulp feels a bit too contrived...

ok lost......but if you tell me you're reading one of Fante's masterpieces (I highly recommend The Brotherhood and Full of Life, in addition to the entire Bandini trilogy, of course), and if you've read snippets of Bukowski (if I were Gelmini, I would make it mandatory for MIDDLE SCHOOL), you could have avoided jumping in with your take on American literature........
dear NEU2..........we're on two different shores........it happens! but you've made me want to "listen to you".............

Dear lostinspace.......you write that it is impossible for "modern American literature to convey something overwhelming to me, in form, in content, in substance?" I have a slight doubt that you've never read anything by Bukowski, Fante, Miller, Kerouac-Cassady and the lovely beat crew, Capote, and may all those I haven't mentioned forgive me............

it's a book that goes down like a barrel of fresh water after a two-hour run under the August sun... there isn't much taste left in the mouth, but in the moment it brings great satisfaction... the votes, the votes, the votes! everything is relative, why discuss it? I vote geenoo...
