The Screamers In A Better World

The recording is unfortunately really poor, below the minimum standards even for a punk group that certainly doesn't make sonic cleanliness a virtue, but then again it’s a mix of bootlegs found by old fans plus a few demos, so it's already a stroke of luck that something exists and that we can listen to it. Some tracks aren’t too far from the angry '77 English punk sound played with guitars, also because the playing style in both cases is "percussive," and the lo-fi of the recording somewhat masks the sound of the synths (it's really a shame not to have an official recording). In other tracks, however, it’s clear that the Screamers are not just any punk band; one standout is the spectacular "Eva Braun," 16 minutes of pathos and electronic repetition during which it seems that, partly as a provocation and partly as "artistic message," they leave the stage, letting the machines play on their own.

It may be that it was the first album by EN that I bought, and therefore I feel attached to it, but I still find it valuable even after listening to much more of their discography (for example, this is a notch above "Tabula Rasa," just to name one). The EN have entered history thanks to the more or less organized chaos carried out in the 80s, but here they offer us real songs that still retain (more in some places, less in others) some reminiscences of noise. But what tracks: "Sabrina" is a charming love song, "Musetango" is a divertissement, "Beauty" is pure poetry, "Newtons Gravitatlichkeit" and "Zampano" are almost cultured dance, "Total Eclipse of The Sun" is dedicated to the astronomical event of August 11, 1999 (in parts of Germany the eclipse was total; for us, a little less). Calling Bargeld's voice in this album "infernal" is completely misleading; here Blixa mostly takes on the role of the calm dandy-chansonnier, with few exceptions, the most evident being the long mantra-sabbath of "Pelikanol," which still manages to give me chills (and unease) even after 11 years.

Listened to again after such a long time, it’s still a beautiful album (or rather a fake EP), with striking and broken rhythms, bare melodies hinted at by sequences of three notes or maybe even less, various "flutters" of electronics; it doesn’t show its 12 years. For me, the most memorable (though that doesn't mean they're the best) are "Maphive" with that pseudo-oriental melody I mentioned above, and "Zeiss Contarex" so alien and unsettling that it chills my blood in my veins (and I’m not joking).

@Pabloescodalbar: even rocks know that the EN weren’t the first to make noise music, but they were great innovators, making the industrial (let's call it that) more physical and less electronic. They expressed better than anyone else the sense of constraint of Homo Sapiens trapped in the jungle of asphalt and steel. They have a discography (to my knowledge) all at a high level without the missteps and rubbish that other historic bands have stumbled upon. Moreover, Blixa also writes some beautiful lyrics. They may be unlikable to some because they’ve become too famous, but I think they deserve it. Finally, to reconnect with the digression on No Wave, check this out: (and listen to it all).

@Untitled: No Wave is a rather limited genre both in terms of historical period (77-81) and the number of representatives. It has already been discussed on debaser No New York - AA.VV. - Recensione di Mike76 James Chance Lydia Lunch - Pre Teen-Age Jesus - Recensione di Gabs Buy - James Chance and The Contortions - Recensione di alealeale82 Unnamed: An Operetta - John Gavanti - Recensione di Gabs Theoretical Record - Theoretical Girls - Recensione di Dopesmoker Glenn Branca - Discografia - Recensioni or alternatively, retrieve a three-part article from the magazine "Blow Up" from late 2008, which is very well written and full of information.

Undoubtedly original, not just any record, even if I personally struggle to endure Ferretti's chanting and declamatory vocal interpretation for an hour. Listener knock-out.

Yes, Untitled is exactly that, a very valid compilation of more or less unknown Aussie new wave/post-punk bands, tracks dug up from dusty archives often pulled from vinyl due to lost masters, gems in short, even though in our discussion about industrial and noise, a maximum of 3-4 tracks might be of interest, the rest is more "sweet," if not more pop.

I Primitive Calculators..... coincidentally, I have a compilation of Australian post-punk that takes its name from the very piece linked "Can't Stop It." However, on my playlist of the Calculators, I have this in an even dirtier version in line with the "hyper-lo-fi" style of early Cabaret Voltaire. That period is a true goldmine of interesting bands.

A few years ago, at a Futurist exhibition in Rovereto, I was fortunate enough to experience (the reconstructions) of Russolo's intonarumori, which were quite curious, although I must say that among the various buzzers, poppers, gurgling machines, etc., there wasn't that much difference in sound. I have five works by EN, but not this one; it seems to me that they are more or less direct descendants of the 70s krautrock, which was perhaps the popular genre where the "noise" element began to gain more importance. Obviously, the main difference between EN and their predecessors lies primarily in the dark-pessimistic and/or crazy-disoriented approach, as well as the exacerbation of the "noise" element. That said, I really like EN, even in their more recent phase of elegant Central European song with the noise element much more limited.
