A memory of KENNY KIRKLAND, who passed away too soon, whom I met at Umbria Jazz a few years after his collaboration with Sting: we were watching a street concert, and nearby was Gil Evans, dancing like a madman. With this excuse, I struck up a conversation with him, and he was laughing heartily at the scene. I remember him as shy, incredibly nice, affable, almost embarrassed by the compliments I gave him for his performance the night before with Marsalis... but then he burst into a big laugh when I asked him, "So how much money did you make playing rock'n'roll with Sting?" Kenny, a little great jazz musician...
