His charisma on stage is unparalleled: I remember the almost obsessive attention directed towards him not only from the audience, but particularly from all the band members... For years, he had played with his back to the audience as a sign of disdain towards the racist white man. This was long gone by the time I saw him, now elderly and somewhat "softened," yet he seemed to be three steps above the stage. Like a puppeteer, he guided his musician puppets during a solo: no one dared to improvise unless the "path" was first indicated by the master: every solo was always preceded by a duet with the master... There was an incredible tension on stage, especially during the concert in Viareggio, while in Bolzano they seemed less inspired. During that time, Miles had released Amandla and Siesta, so his solos were filled with "splashes of Spain" of indescribable beauty (and so I pause and blast live around the world at full volume).

Thank you, Antonio! I almost missed the Umbria Jazz concert: I had set out hitchhiking from Bologna but had little luck with rides and arrived late. (we didn’t even know where it was playing and ended up in the city instead of at the stadium) I could kick myself for thinking about it again; my friends who were there confirm your impression. As a consolation, I later saw an amazing concert in Viareggio in a tent theater: (I hoped you were there too) in my memories, it lasted an eternity (but you know how it is, certain psychotropic substances stretch the perception of time) I think it was the band you mentioned, with Foley and Garret. I saw them again in '88 in Bolzano, same lineup, more or less. Maybe they had changed the guitarist... oh dear, my memory.

debaser will be the cause of my financial ruin: last week I bought 10 CDs and a DVD! Then I come here, read this page, and I feel like heading to the first jazz specialty store.

I just saw them live, and I was a bit biased because the album hadn't excited me. The concert, however, was beautiful. People were leaving the concert with red eyes...

just bought "Blue Wild Angel" the live DVD of Hendrix at the Isle of Wight Festival: great sound, good editing, and useful extras! But if someone says this is the best, I'll grab this one too!

Miles' version of 'Round Midnight is the most beautiful of all, and Coltrane, still very young, with that solo has entered the pantheon of jazz...
