Now you tell me what importance the REM have in music in general. Don't exaggerate, great band, immense band, fantastic band... POP. Point: POP, no importance in music in general, importance below zero in music in general. Great group okay, but it has nothing to do with music in general, come on... nice little songs but come on, for the REM I prefer the DT, at least there's music to listen to, not just four whines to death.

I believe you've pinpointed the fundamental problem with the music of the 4 show-offs from Boston: the complete lack of any substance in their music... but this issue isn't just about the arrangements; it's about the very way of composing/presenting/interpreting/l iving music: mutilating sophisticated rock music (that movement aimed at breaking down the barriers between jazz and rock, and especially between classical and rock) by extracting it from its original context, stripping it of its compositional/philological/historic al and, why not, philosophical reasons... and so everything boils down to form. Of course, music can also be seen as something other than an art form; there are projects not aimed at creating works of art (Chick Corea Elektric Band, Bozzio Levin Stevens, Dave Weckl Band, Marcus Miller) that don't satisfy profound viewpoints, but none of these are so terribly exalted; they're taken for what they are. The Dream Theater, on the other hand, drag along legions of young enthusiasts who believe they're part of the future and the highest inspiration of music, not realizing that they are listening to more accessible rehashes (I want to see one of these appreciate Larks' Tongues in Aspic) that are more easily linked to the garbage they hear (the grandiose pompous ballads, for example), made from material that has already made history and created a school. If someone truly wanted to hear the future of prog (not understood as a genre, but as the philosophy of wanting to move forward by eliminating mental barriers, questioning banal musical certainties), they would listen to Tortoise.
