I don't feel like repeating that entire discussion now... I know very well the difference between black and death metal. Death metal is undoubtedly more technical, there's no denying that. Black metal, especially in its early days, was sparse and rough, with either short or overly long tracks featuring few chords and zero time changes... That said, we’re not talking about a purely black metal band here, nor a band from the early days, but about Dimmu Borgir. Which, when listened to without earplugs, means: splendid riffs, perfect and evocative orchestrations, one of the best black metal singers around, darkness, Norwegian forests, fog, etc. Not to mention the drummer, Nickolas Barker, who is a true phenomenon... The philosophy of black metal is different from that of death metal; it doesn't rely on individual technique but on the evocation of decadent, dark, and morbid feelings through brutal and minimalist music. But even that is not the case with Dimmu, who are not minimalist at all...
