So, let's see... Did you know that when "Scenes from a Memory" was released, there were comments similar to those found on this page? That album, which is a masterpiece (if certain people find it commercial, that's their problem), was viewed as yet another "sappy" work by Dream Theater after "Falling Into Infinity" (a beautiful album, not perfect but really good). Now, it is rightly considered one of the best works of the Dream Theater. Is it possible that with every release I have to hear comments like:
"Dream Theater are a pain, they’re five monsters and then they do crap (e.g. Hollow Years, Wait for Sleep, Disappear, Take Away My Pain, Anna Lee... and often Another Day!)" or:
"All Dream Theater songs are the same(!?!?!?!????!!!!??!!!!!!)" or:
"They're hypertechnical, they have no feeling" or, one of my favorites:
"Yes, if I also had the money to study at Berklee, I would have made I&W too (NO COMMENT. . .)" and so on. If we take "Train of Thought," there are no melodious and sappy pieces, yet they complained. If we take "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence," the pieces are very experimental and unlike any others, but they still had something to say. If we take "Octavarium," where there’s no exaggerated hypertechnicality that made the solos in the first two pieces of the previous album sound the same, but they still find something to complain about. Dream Theater will never please everyone because there are too many factors at play (those who loved "Falling Into Infinity" don’t want an album in the style of "Awake"). And if we consider that Dream Theater has made 8 different albums, DIFFERENT, and I repeat D-I-F-F-E-R-E-N-T, it’s NORMAL that not everyone likes them!
But what frustrates me the most is that often the people disparaging Dream Theater are those who don’t even like them! I almost loathe death metal, yet I’ve listened to it; from time to time, I hear "The Sound of Perseverance" by Death or "Focus" by Cynic, but otherwise I find it an unbearable genre, and I don’t go where they review albums to say how much I dislike it. It also annoys me to hear comments like:
"I haven’t listened to it, but I already know what to expect; it’s Dream Theater, they suck!" Rating 1.
Or:
"What a drag, they put me to sleep!"
That’s why I haven’t posted in forums for a while! You end up in a pointless battle at the risk of being told you’re a fanboy who would give their life for Dream Theater! I like the songs of this damn band, all of them! Some more than others! There are better bands, but that's not what we’re talking about! This album is proof that Dream Theater has changed again, as they have since "When Dream and Day Unite." The more I listen to this album, the more I like it, melodic, flowing, new! If any being who has listened WELL (we all know a CD isn’t listened to once while reading the newspaper on the toilet, but deserves attention; they didn’t review Blue on here!) tells me they don’t like the CD, FINE BY ME! But don’t bother me by talking about why the previous albums are better or how other bands are more prog, thrash, heavy, death, black, gothic, power, technical, melodic, sentimental, gay, and so on! Dream remains Dream, but unfortunately, people remain the same! Bye, and sorry for the rant!
