Oh my God, "going into a trance" beats even my "enjoying with a pig" from a few posts above!

But when you listen to the Pixies, do you think "what a beautiful message"? Isn't it better to read Nietzsche?

"The 'noise' of Bitches Brew is a noise that feels 'so alternative,' or is it a way to tell us something?" Oh God Lux, it's music, but are you looking at the message? If you want a message, don't listen to music... the message is the music.

Well, in the end, the term "indulgent" is a bit overused. What do you mean? That if there aren't three dirty chords then it's extra? In the end, it's music; without the theories, it justifies itself. For example, in *Bitches*, without going into too much detail—which I could easily do—I enjoy the crazy chords Hancock pulls out (really, harmonically I think there are very few albums this cool), and the slow yet tense trumpet lines of Miles. I like that it sounds mean, mysterious, and nocturnal, a labyrinth with thousands of details to discover with each listen. Whether it’s jazz, rock, blues, rumba, who cares?

@dolphy: oh okay, I misunderstood. It’s very true that many listens are probably needed in this case.

Let me explain better: if I, along with many others, consider it Davis's masterpiece (for instance, I will always prefer Bitches to Kind of Blue), well, it has that effect at first, but it has a terrifying groove, it's a psychedelic and visceral album, not at all lacking in communication. I mean, the issue that you don't like it is more yours; I can only tell you that trying it out more times is worth it like with few other albums. I insisted on listening because I was very curious, but at first, it also sounded very alien to me inevitably. But if you don’t like it, amen (the album by Baustelle, which in that case you would thoroughly deserve).

Dolphy, can I say that you just made a nonsense? You either like records or you don't. Maybe it takes a few listens to appreciate it, but saying that a kind of "superior culture" is needed is nonsense, one of those snobby remarks that Ali Murtacc alluded to which keeps so many people away from jazz.

lux, but its communicative power Bitches Brew has it like few albums, otherwise I wouldn't listen to it and neither would many others. Anyway, if you get the chance, check out Collateral, the classic two birds with one stone: you watch a great movie and maybe you also dive into Miles' music. For instance, I fully appreciated in a gadda da vidda (Mann clearly must be one of those with a particular talent for blending images and music) just by hearing it in the stunning final scene of Manhunter.

You're absolutely right about the ratings, it's a safe bet, isn’t it? Jazz can’t be less than 5 (or at most 4), which is an immeasurable nonsense; how many unfinished and boring albums would look absolutely terrible next to good rock albums? But since it's jazz, it gets a 5 by default. And this whole rating thing is one of the reasons many people view it with disdain. But Bitches is equally stratospheric :D
