Charles Mingus The Great Concert Of Charles Mingus

@Conte:>>>if someone has only listened to rock until the day before, they have little chance of appreciating B.B. the day after<<<< I, on the other hand, appreciated him precisely for that reason; it was one of the first jazz records I enjoyed, and it's no coincidence that it's called jazzrock, that it was played at rock festivals, or that it sold so much. It served as a bridge between the two worlds precisely because of its closeness to certain sounds.

<<<I said that Third is more physical than BB>>> and I said that, knowing the two albums WELL, it's objectively nonsense, like saying that Surfer Rosa is more relaxing than Music for Airports by Eno. There’s little grip on the mirrors, Lux. >>> (Bitches Brew) has an ultra-abstract cerebral physicality. >>> Face Lift is more abstract than the entirety of Miles' album combined. This becomes clear if you know the two albums well, of course.

In my opinion, Atlantis for him is about ABSOLUTE EVIL.

*"since you say that a straight record like third is physical"*

<<<what is the key to understanding jazz (the least subjective possible)?>>> but damn it, Lux, what’s the common thread that ties Chuck Berry’s music to that of Pantera? If you tell me again “expressiveness,” I swear I’ll kill you. Bitches Brew is expressive. The key to understanding is: the ears; others don’t need to listen to it for you. If you like it, great, if you don’t, that’s your problem; if by chance (that’s the idea) you think people say they appreciate it just to sound sophisticated, I assure you it’s not like that. As for the example of Third that you gave, it shows me how little you’ve grasped Bitches Brew, given that you say an ethereal album like the one by Soft Machine is anything but “physical,” certainly much less than Davis's album: Slightly All Time more physical than Miles Runs the Voodoo Down? Out-Bloody-Rageous with those Riley-like sections more physical than Spanish Key? Come on. The truth is that it’s not that you don’t like jazz; you just don’t love instrumentals, and that’s a whole different conversation.

And by the way, compliments on your choice of rock album :) The instrumentals of that album (unless you adore Facelift, which, if I may say, is quite cerebral) are heavily jazz-influenced, and truly inspired by early electric Miles!

Lux, as you understood, my impression is that perhaps you don’t enjoy instrumentals in general, more than jazz. I don’t know, there are many vocal jazz pieces in this case (and not just ballads, by the way).

If you understand where I'm coming from, I bet the piece you like the most is "moon in june," which is not instrumental :)

Oh, of course. Entirely instrumental records (or tracks). Anyway Lux, look, you can snub jazz all you want, you can say you think it's awful, but this thing about expressiveness is a load of nonsense, seriously, especially since you haven’t really heard much at all.

No, really you said: "jazz doesn't communicate with me because it's too abstract" and I replied, "listen to that record, it’s not abstract." Then you said, "jazz doesn't have a message" and I told you that a lot of jazz has a political nature. Question: but aside from jazz, what instrumental records do you like? In rock, I mean.
