Afterhours Live Con Scazzottata Al Filmore 24/02/2006

Forgive me, dear Bonj, but what does the word "artist" have to do with what happened at the Filmore? At the Filmore, Manuel showed that he is not a "professional." That he is an "artist" is demonstrated by the songs he produces. Then maybe you can explain to me your method for defining an artist. It might be enlightening, I don’t know. For now, thanks for the -10 (at least you didn't directly call me an imbecile).

I love Afterhours, Manuel is a great artist. I completely understand his resentment if a handful of idiots decide to ruin his concert (and especially, for heaven’s sake, even Mike Buongiorno knew that Ballads for Little Hyenas had been released). But come on, from what I've read it seems that our friend didn’t worry one bit about presenting the new CD, nor about explaining anything. He simply sang those songs in English, period. And then when he lost his cool, he walked off, second point. No irony, no willingness to engage, just tension and anger. Why, Manuel? How did you think the Italian audience would react to your translated songs? Did you really think there wouldn’t be sarcastic comments or protests? Come on, you're not a kid anymore; enough with this nonsense of spitting on those who help pay your bills, enough with these attitudes that seem so cool but smell of little. Get down from your pedestal, come on. And to think that at the last concerts of the old tour, many fans said they saw you relaxed, calm, even smiling. In fact, I even happened to be just a couple of steps away while you were signing autographs that magical evening in Rome, with Greg and Mark, and you were talking and smiling in photos with the crowd, giving a little something to nobodies like me. I close by asking you to remember, in the future, but especially for all the upcoming Roman dates (where I will be coming to see you anyway), that you are a professional, for heaven's sake. If this doesn’t happen, if you want to leave everything and everyone again in the middle of the evening, retreating to your cozy and offended dressing rooms, well, forgive me but you can go to America, have the greatest success and finally, last but not least, GO FUCK YOURSELF.

x Vì: I'm sorry, I don't know, maybe some single. The only doubt: some time ago, a tribute to De André was released by various independent Italian bands in Mucchio Extra. The funny thing is that I even bought it, but I don't remember if Basile is included. I'll look for it and let you know.
Anyway, I forgot (in a rude way) to tell you: great review.

It's hard to say which is better between calavera and hellequin... For sure, I've seen the new songs live and they are spectacular! Great Basile!!! x Hal: As for the more "sunny" Basile (uhm, tough search), I think it's better to look at the first two solo LPs (they're much more rock, in my opinion less inspired, but with a quicker grip and more color: there's not just smoke, shadows, and ghosts).

Well, that’s done too. This is the second review I would have definitely done if I had sat down at the computer for 5 minutes after work. Notes: "Fratello gentile" doesn’t seem like a waltz to me; in fact, it’s the "rock" track of the bunch (assuming there can be rock in the current Basile). "Canzone italiana" as a genre? Dunno, as you rightly say, there’s little Italian about it. It would be better to say: "Occasionally Italian singer-songwriter song, Folk, Blues."

PS: I happened to read the review of this album on XL. A SHAME. Here’s the link: link rotto There are two questions. The first: is it possible to allow people to write whatever the hell comes to their mind? The second and more important: is this idiot (or better, let’s put it this way, this intelligent person who has fallen into a temporary abyss of idiocy) really convinced that "The greatest" is an "indie" album? Well, I would have my (humble but) serious doubts. I really appreciated that Hal didn’t use the magic word mentioned above for the Degeneri but simply Soul Blues Folk Country. The truth is that it’s precisely the indie fans fresh off "You are free" who might turn their noses up at these old-styled songs.

I still have to digest this album. I got it when it came out, but the damn commitments (well, it would be better to say bullshit) of my life have prevented me from giving the proper honors to Chan, the honors she always deserves. This album is dichotomous: on one hand, the music dives headfirst (perhaps too much for me) into the classic (by the way, it seems to me that it was played by old souls and the like, or to be more precise, true "old-timers"), on the other hand, her voice continues to strive for the concept of "special effect." Terrifying: wisps of smoke that envelop and captivate you, at times it gave me the impression of a worn-out tape played backward, with a shimmering flow of volume ripples. Wow. Yesterday I was listening to "What would the community think" again and, well, in comparison, the voice now sounds like the 3D version of the earlier one (maybe it's just better recorded, but what do I know). The only flaw of this artist is that she still doesn't know she's my girlfriend.

Well! I really liked the album. What a drag with this whole story of the old-school punk, with this opposition between the cool kids who had the luck/money/time (and obviously the desire) to check out all the sub and sub-subgenres in the world, and the losers who didn’t. You might be my age (30 years), but your arguments sound infantile. Last note: the same album was reviewed by Kosmogabri. Rating: 5 stars. Does this mean that Gabri is a "loser who doesn’t know shit about music"? It didn’t seem that way to me.

Nice review, well done ja. Very well done. I just don't quite agree about Meg White's sexual appeal (to me she's kind of a turn-off). Well, de gustibus.
