Dream Theater Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory

And that Eastern-sounding riff as you call it is nothing but the usual Petrucci minor scale. And what you said about "a pathetic attempt to seem more original" is bullshit. Let me tell you, it’s bullshit. Listen carefully to "Home" again and you’ll realize what a great song it is. It seems like you have a serious grudge against them and you’re even willing to say outrageous things just to throw dirt at them. If you want to do that, then go for their worst songs (I would agree). Don't touch their gems.

I don't agree. Not entirely, at least. Dream Theater are one of the most derivative bands in music history, that's clear. But you can't base a review of an album like this solely on that idea. It should be expressed, at most, in a broader context regarding the true identity of Dream Theater. Are they genuine or just pretending? Are their albums masterpieces or trash? Then your argument makes sense, but not here. Because those few good albums (or individual songs) that Dream Theater have made are great albums (or songs). This is the case with "Scenes...". I loved "Home" and I will continue to love it. However, I've never loved them. It’s a bit like Korn. 50% crap and 50% great songs. The same. Originality, though, is a different discussion.

I’m redoing the comment. I have to admit it’s nice, some songs like "Stranded" are not bad at all. But the real reason I listen to it once a year is... Christmas! I downloaded it a while ago around Christmas, and since then it’s a tradition for me to listen to "Anthology" once a year under the tree! :-D

Here, this hyper-growl sucks for me... But couldn't he just use the normal growl?? In fact, in my opinion, the scream would have fit much better...

Great album, indeed. Here the Poles shift the sounds towards a death metal enhanced by crystal-clear production and leave behind the black trends of the past. The introductory parts are nice as well. Negative note: the vocals!!! They are a real mess, the ones from "Satanica" (as well as the others) were 1000 times better! At least, I don't like them... The review is good, but maybe you digressed a bit too much...

Can someone tell me which Pixies album I can find "Where is my mind"? (the song from Fight Club, just to be clear)

That's why it is said, for example: "it's a masterpiece of black metal." The field is limited to a specific genre because only those accustomed to black metal sounds will be able to listen to the album and call it a masterpiece. Everyone else will never listen to it (of course, if they don't like the genre, why should they?), but that doesn't change the fact that the album in question, on its own, isolated from the rest, is a masterpiece. All those who don't listen to that genre can't do anything about it!! :-) Do you understand now? It's pointless for someone who only listens to Ligabue to come to the review of "Nemesis Divina" and write "This album is crap!" because their judgment holds no value, and it can't hold any. It's natural.

As you can see, it's something very different from the simple pleasure that comes from sounds (which is subjective), so an album like this will remain a masterpiece regardless of whether someone just can't stand Serj's voice and will never listen to it. Those who understand the album and have felt those emotions that allow them to define it—always and only with full awareness—as a masterpiece, become a sort of witnesses, and maybe they will review it. The others will continue not to understand it and to penalize it, but those are just their problems; the value of the album is not affected, it cannot be affected by this type of judgment. Do you get what I mean?

For me, it's not exactly like that, dear anonymous... You see, unanimous judgment doesn't exist and saying "almost" makes no sense. What's important is not the QUANTITY, but the QUALITY. Let me explain: it's not important how many people feel emotions when listening to an album, but what kind of emotions they feel. For example: I really like Behemoth, but the albums they've made are NOT masterpieces. I like them because I enjoy death/black metal sounds, but I don't feel any particular emotions while listening to them, aside from a nice sense of pleasure. To those who don't like these sounds, they won't enjoy them. The same goes for "Toxicity" by System; it doesn't please everyone (of course), but the feelings I experience are different. It's not about taking pleasure in the sound; it's about living an emotion that only that specific structure of notes and interconnected sounds can give you. A masterpiece, by definition, is unique: there are no albums similar in the type of emotions they evoke. "Satanica" and "Thalema 6" by Behemoth are not very different in terms of the sensations they provide (pure headbanging for both), while "Toxicity," which is a masterpiece, is different from "Mezmerize," which is not, even though they are both by System, because the latter fails to evoke the sensations of its predecessor.
