While primarily instrumental music, jazz has over time expressed extraordinary voices like that of Bessie Smith, known for their intensity, interpretative warmth, and technique. Jazz emerges and takes shape with the rise of the black minority in American society, but it descends from when black slaves in America invented their own music: memories of African roots transplanted onto the popular sounds of whites and infused with Christian religious songs. At first, singing accompanies work (the blues), then it becomes prayer (spiritual and gospel). But we can say that the beginning can be identified in New Orleans.
