Caz, in your reasoning, you simplify things a bit too much.
It's not true that after punk, only shit music has been in the charts (well, the last ten years, yes), but there's a long way from there to blaming punk for it.
In my opinion, punk had its meaning when it exploded; then, like everything, it was chewed up by the industry of cool, becoming the uselessness it is now.
And it doesn't mean a damn thing that if it's easy to play, it's for the incompetent, because if you look closely, even the Stooges aren't difficult to play.
