The irrational number, of which 0.618 is an approximation, is known as the Golden Number and is defined as the ratio of the golden section, or golden proportion. This ratio has been considered, since its discovery, as a representation of the universal law of harmony.
The golden proportion was widely used by the ancient Greeks as a harmonic ratio in architectural constructions and sculptural representations, for example in the proportions of the Caryatids that support the Erechtheion or in the Parthenon on the Athenian Acropolis. The golden ratio was also largely revisited in the Renaissance: the dimensions of the Mona Lisa, by Leonardo da Vinci, are in golden ratio. And even up to the present day, in modern architecture: the United Nations Secretariat Building has golden proportions. The trends in the stock market, the biological growth of certain species, the spacing between leaves along a stem, and the arrangement of petals and seeds in some types of flowers like the sunflower often exhibit patterns related to those of the Fibonacci numbers. The Nautilus, a large mollusk whose shell section resembles a perfect logarithmic spiral, demonstrates how the golden section is the mathematical expression of beauty and elegance in nature.

On the packaging of the latest Tool album, there is a drawing of a Fibonacci spiral... that is, a spiral based on the Fibonacci mathematical series. For those who aren't familiar with it, it's a recursively defined sequence where each term after the second is the sum of the two preceding terms (1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,...). Dividing two consecutive numbers in the Fibonacci numerical sequence (excluding the first) always yields a number extremely close to the irrational 0.618033988749895, which corresponds to the square root of five divided by two, plus one. This number is called the golden ratio... it’s the number on which Leonardo based the design of the Vitruvian man...

it goes up to 8, back down to 1, up to 13, back down to 3, it fits with the fibonacci sequence in order and it fits perfectly, line by line, with the syllabols. no stretching or mashing together to make it fit. it is clearly intentional. with this, i can't think anyone could say that the spiral in the song does NOT refer to the fibonacci spiral. i'm sure it may refers to all the other things mentioned too, but it is definately referring to the fibonacci spiral if anything. as well, i and everyone else who is familiar with the fibonacci sequence would immediately make that connection when presented with the rest of the themes in this song.
as i recall (and check the FAQ if you don't) the song lateralus was originally going to be named "987", assumedly for the beat measures going from 9 to 8 to 7... but if you carry out the fibonacci sequence long enough, you come to the number 987. observe:
1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987.
