When I was thirteen/fourteen years old, around '76/'77, Bennato was highly snubbed by everyone in what was then the tide of the "Movement," a structure so varied and chaotic that it ended up tearing itself apart and melting away.
What we shared regarding the Architect was a fluctuating opinion that tended toward "Qualunquista" tout court, a term that was then applied to those who, equally divided between the cunning and the sincere, expressed opinions and judgments, even ruthless ones, towards many, too many targets, thus ending up dispersing meanings and denunciations.
It must be said that not many singer-songwriters escaped such criticism, but equally targeted were names for whom today such a definition would seem inappropriate, even unthinkable... With De André, there was the added issue of being from a high bourgeois family, with De Gregori being deliberately cryptic and therefore elitist, with Guccini being an alcoholic, and so on...
