Enrico Berlinguer (Sassari, May 25, 1922 - Padua, June 10, 1984)
Italian politician. He joined the PCI in 1943, entered the central committee in 1945, and served as secretary of the FGCI from 1949 to 1956.
A member of the national secretariat in 1958, after a long career as an organizer within the party, he became deputy secretary in 1969 and secretary in 1972, succeeding Luigi Longo. In 1973, he initiated a 'new course' for the politics of the Italian Communist Party, launching the formula of the 'compromesso storico' (historic compromise). Following the electoral successes of June 1975 and 1976, his policy led to the historic result of the party entering the government majority, but had negative repercussions in the electoral field.
Fundamental was his vision of "democratic socialism," which led him to openly contest the repression by the Soviet Union of the "Prague Spring" led by Dubcek in '68. His stance was equally clear regarding Moscow's interference in Afghanistan and Poland in the early '80s. Another key theme in Enrico Berlinguer's politics was the moral question, that is, the denunciation of corruption and the overpowering nature of the party system. In November 1980, he launched the proposal for a government of the left, open to secular and progressive Catholics, but relations with the Socialist Party increasingly deteriorated. He then led a strong opposition to the pentapartito led by Craxi, especially on economic decrees and the reduction of wage mechanisms in the sliding scale. On these issues, he proposed a popular referendum, which marked the defeat of the PCI and the fracture not only within the left but also in the trade union organizations themselves.
The defeat of his political proposal on the domestic front (compromesso storico) corresponded, on the international stage, with the decline of expectations for Eurocommunism following the decline of the French and Spanish communist parties. Berlinguer collapsed while giving a speech on June 7, 1984, in Padua during the campaign for the European elections. He passed away three days later.
