On the occasion of the IX Italian Geographical Congress, in 1926, the subdivisions of the alpine system were established based on the document "Nomi e limiti delle grandi parti del Sistema Alpino". The main division identifies three large parts: Western Alps, Central Alps, and Eastern Alps, further divided into 26 sections and 112 groups.
The Western Alps extend from the Colle di Cadibona to the Col Ferret; the Central Alps from the Col Ferret to the Brenner Pass; the Eastern Alps from the Brenner Pass to the city of Fiume. These three major parts are further subdivided into:
Western Alps: Alpi Marittime, Alpi Liguri, Alpi Cozie, Alpi Graie, Alpi di Provenza, Alpi del Delfinato, Prealpi di Provenza, Prealpi del Delfinato, Prealpi di Savoia.
Central Alps: Alpi Pennine, Alpi Lepontine, Alpi Retiche, Alpi bernesi, Alpi Glaronesi, Prealpi Svizzere, Alpi Bavaresi, Prealpi lombarde.
Eastern Alps: Alpi Noriche, Dolomiti, Alpi Carniche, Alpi Giulie, Caravanche, Alpi salisburghesi, Alpi austriache, Prealpi di Stiria, Prealpi venete, Carso.
