Perhaps my favorite writer. The opening is, as usual, brilliant, as is the mastery with which he branches out the plot from that surreal starting point. What convinces me less is the tone, which in this book is less incisive and more light/ironic, almost as if he wrote it for fun, as a pastime. In short, works like Blindness, The Tale of the Siege of Lisbon, The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, but also Cain, An Essay on Lucidity, The Cave, and The Stone Raft are on another level. It almost made me want to write a review of The Tale of the Siege of Lisbon. Well done.

Dear Hammer, I may be limited, but at the moment I can't grasp the meaning of this tsunami of words. Certainly, in the face of this statement, you could retort, "What did you expect from a hammer?" And indeed, upon reflection, a hammer hammers. It is undeniable that you have shattered my nerves with your drumming hammering method at line 20, and so you did a fantastic job. I certainly envy your free time.

Reading Ballard is always time well spent. I also recommend The Wind from Nowhere (if you want to waste time, I reviewed it in the Jurassic), Empire of the Sun, and the superb and little-known The Atrocity Exhibition. I wasn't crazy about this one, but it's been too long and I should reread it. But maybe not.
