As already mentioned elsewhere, for various reasons I couldn’t make it... In any case, I still believe that the setlist of a concert should be varied and "unexpected"; this one seems quite particular to me, even though the idea of focusing on a single style doesn’t really excite me. The Ulver, for instance, at the concert in April played the entire last album plus just one other track from their discography ("Hallways Of Always") without even giving space to "Shadows Of The Sun" or "Blood Inside," which is almost a crime... Not to mention Anathema, who last year gave us almost two and a half hours of (great) performance, but the songs are always the same old worn-out ones and you know what to expect (not even a piece from my favorite "A Fine Day To Exit," bah). All this to say that, yes, in the end I'm still bummed for missing the Opeth. :D

Anyway, VV, you’ve made me want to listen to "Winterkälte" again. Six tracks for over an hour and a half of icy black metal produced like crazy dog shit. SLURP!!

Well done, Vincent, for discussing this small but precious project of the Swiss militant also in Darkspace. The record (it's a demo, like most of the other releases) is a good piece of work, about 3 and a half stars, but in my opinion, the peak of the more ambient side of Paysage D'Hiver is found in the masterpiece "Einsamkeit"...

By the way, to stay on topic, a few days ago I just replayed (even if only for a little while, fortunately) one of the games that best encapsulates what was mentioned earlier: Resident Evil 5. I think it’s one of the worst things that ever happened in the world of video games… Stupid and cumbersome inventory management, annoying AI of the partner, control system identical to that of RE4 for PS2 (why the hell can’t you move while shooting, like you can even do in Tomb Raider 1?! And thank goodness Chris Redfield is a semi-acrobatic muscle man in the cutscenes) and outdated… The story is pretty terrible, zero atmosphere; but but but, hold on, there’s nice graphics, well then if there’s that, it must definitely be a great game…

I truly believe it’s one of the albums that has given me the most trouble. I don’t know, sometimes it feels like it’s made of hot air, tedious and insubstantial, especially in the second half; at other times, I even find it better than "Mezzanine." I give it a big I DUNNO and won’t rate it (I’d have to average between a 2 and a 5), but one thing I’m absolutely sure of: "What Your Soul Sings" is one of the best tracks by Massive, I thought that right from the first listen...

I don't know, I see that it has really disappointed almost everyone and I feel a bit stupid saying that I still like it despite a couple of tracks not being up to par ("Dark Matter" and "Hollow" may be among the darkest in Bjork's repertoire, but I just don't get them)... Anyway, I agree, her voice does seem a bit fatigued, I think of when she yells "a mutual cooooOOOOORE, HOOOOOOHOOHOOOO" and it sounds like she's trying to relieve some terrible constipation. My favorite remains "Thunderbolt"; when I don't feel like listening to the whole album, I just play it three or four times in a row.

I'm starting to deeply hate all these next-gen video games... All flashy graphics and no substance, then when they’re so frustrating to play it just makes me laugh. I've got the urge to reconnect the old PSX and pop in Crash Bandicoot 2, take that you pathetic nerds who sit there critiquing the textures, go crash into a pole:

Oh, you flatter me like this! :D To respond to seagull, I would copy gate's comment word for word, but I would add that, despite having truly created a story of their own, one cannot help but compare them to the deconstruction of black metal by their fellow countrymen DsO (damned snail-eaters!). I've always considered them "cousins," and let’s not forget that the much-acclaimed "Si Monumentum" (2004) was released after the more overlooked and underground "The Work Which Transforms God" (2003), a milestone of avant-garde black metal that is too often underrated... This is just to say that Blut are certainly not newcomers, you know... Then the two groups may have also followed different paths, in terms of means and consistency (Deathspell made an incredible leap in quality after "Inquisitors," immediately working on the trilogy and amazing EPs, with a conceptual and musical cohesion that leaves one speechless... Blut, on the other hand, have been a bit more scattered; just look at the chasm that separates a wonderfully unlistenable album like "MoRT" from the sudden returns to original black with "Memoria Vetusta II" and the more recent EP "What Once Was... Liber I," or the industrial pause of "Thematic Emanation," only to later condense all their best ideas in this last trilogy), but certain aspects that unite them cannot be denied. Negura, however, is a separate case and has nothing to do with the little Frenchmen mentioned above; in the sense that their intention is not to dismantle the genre to elevate it to another level: in no Negura album, not even in "OM" or "'n Crugu Bradului," no matter how innovative, elaborate, original, and fresh they may be, do we find the sonic extremities of BaN or DsO. I believe they simply want to DEEPEN an aspect of black, that is, the folk, spiritual, naturalistic side, drawing all their inspiration from their land (Romania) and its traditions/legends... Of course, they are always "ahead," and I would have no problem classifying them as avant-garde black, but the strange thing is that they are closer to classic black than DsO and BaN, paradoxically much more violent and iconoclastic.
