First of all, calm down for a moment because you seem too caught up in the discussion. We're not here to fight. Anyway, in my opinion, the groups I've mentioned belong to the punk genre. You know, I would even include the Velvet (John Cale, I know perfectly well who he is) and the Stooges, who came before punk, but if you listen to them, it doesn't take long to understand what kind of music it is. Slint have nothing to do with punk? Uhhmm, do you at least know who Slint are? Maybe you meant to tell me they were more hardcore than punk; who knows what you mean. What about Minor Threat? What kind of music were they making? Classical music? And Television? Who did they influence? Certainly not my sister. Anyway, apart from this, Pink Floyd (who I actually quite like) being one of the greatest bands ever has a greater influence on people. Honestly, who hasn't heard the name Pink Floyd? Do you know how many 14-year-olds I see walking around in "Dark Side" shirts? I certainly don't deny that prog is a genre that's hard to understand and listen to, but especially Pink Floyd... In my opinion, there is a bit of elite music for every genre. You can say King Crimson is elite, but I can also tell you that Hüsker Dü is too, and you can't argue with me because it just is. You say punk was tainted by Avril Lavigne and MTV, and I respond that TRUE punk has nothing to do with Avril Lavigne and empty TV. As for your life, I don't know what to tell you. I can actually tell you that I have several friends who play hardcore in Palermo (my city) and make a living handing out flyers during the day and playing at night. And to finish, I don't believe that to compose a good song you need to spend years in a conservatory; if someone has talent, they can do it even while strumming on a guitar. You know that some of the most beautiful songs ever made are also the simplest. For example, I, who like punk, can play "Mother" by Pink Floyd on the guitar without any issues. Life is like that; falsehood and injustice always win. But while you suffer so much, other artists from different genres face the same struggles.

but then if mtv is what it is, it's not the fault of the pistols or the clash or who knows who, if you only think about making a profit you end up with this, but it’s not just mtv, this problem is in everything that accompanies us in life

Those you mentioned have nothing to do with punk; when I say punk, I mean something very different that you probably don't fully grasp, just as I don't know much about progressive since I find it not interesting at all. Anyway, if by punk you mean Avril Lavigne, Tokio Hotel, and the bullshit proposed by MTV, then you have a distorted view of things. These guys have nothing to do with what we understand as punk, absolutely nothing. As for the fact that the lesser works of Pink Floyd sell more than the major punk bands, that's true, but it's because Pink Floyd makes a genre accessible to more people. We all know that life is unfair; even Berlusconi controls Italy, but don't tell me he has any particular merits for doing so :)

Yes, everyone knows that Curtis was a great admirer of prog and that he despised punk, but come on, how can you say that punk destroyed old values like commitment, passion, sacrifice, and determination? Are we kidding? These values were upheld especially by bands that, despite making music of the highest level—like those mentioned by NGW or others like Slint, Joy Division themselves, Minor Threat, and Television—had barely any success, unlike bands like Pink Floyd, who with every album they released, good or bad, had millions in sales and fans following them, and besides the values you mentioned, they also had the value of money. And what about the Minutemen? Who, in terms of technique and talent, are probably even better than Pink Floyd—what did they have? I never loved the Sex Pistols, but I firmly believe that without them (and without the influences that led to their existence, see Iggy, Velvet Underground, all the way to the Beatles and even the early Pink Floyd), rock today would have been nothing but a tremendous bore, only for people who spent years and years studying an instrument. Instead, punk really destroyed everything bad that was being created, nullifying it and providing new foundations for the music that would come afterward. Furthermore, music, in my view, is for everyone, not just for the elite who can afford to study an instrument for years, and in the end, the simplest things are the most beautiful. To conclude, I find this reflection of yours completely nonsensical—it's just throwing a discussion out there for the sake of it, utterly pointless. You come here to say that punk sucks while claiming you listen to classical prog and Sting—like NGW said, educate yourself a bit about what you're talking about and then argue decently.
