I didn't follow the discussion, but I totally agree with Larrok's last comment even though the namesake of Deftones isn't that bad... sure, Around the Fur and White Pony are on another level. What great albums they made. Maybe Adrenaline is a bit raw, but the two that came after were and are really great albums.

From One Castle to Another is written like this not for a mere stylistic exercise... it's written like this because Céline lived everything sedated, immersed in animals of all kinds, with three pairs of trousers on top of each other held up by a rope. He lived in a world that hated and rejected him, a world that called for his execution and desecrated his mother's grave. Reading the Céline of the Final Trilogy hurts... he was a destroyed man who comforted himself by remembering that he had been a great bastard. It's better to read about when he was and acted like the great bastard. Enough with the memories.

Reading "Patriotism is a bunch of bullshit" in a review of Celine is an abomination. The downside of becoming a famous writer post-mortem is 1) not making a dime 2) having your words hijacked by someone who understands neither you nor what you wrote. We need to stop expecting only beautiful and right things from people. Celine is Celine precisely because he transcends beauty and righteousness. Written by him, even spreading one's dick to bang a big ass (Death on Credit) becomes sublime. An anti-Jew/anti-modernity person who has always defended himself by claiming to be interested in the good of the French must now hear that "Patriotism is a bunch of bullshit." Poor Celine, if he could, he'd tell you to fuck off. For sure.

In my opinion, no one should be idolized, especially a sharp teenager like MacKaye or a nerd at the last stage like Baker, who also happened to get lucky with money, ending up playing even with Bad Religion (whom I truly despise!) ... the way I see it, it's just nonsense that I wouldn't partake in, but I can respect (I mean the straight-edge), and I can also choose to ignore... in the end, Flipper were heavily drugged and they sound like drugs, Minor Threat were clean, but both made records that will scare people even in three hundred years. For everything else, a big "who cares" is the best response :)
