John Coltrane Blue Train
Voto:
Coltrane: a beautiful human being, inside and out. Also listen to 'Live at the Vanguard' with Thelonious Monk's orchestra, as well as 'Mating Call' with Tadd Cameron. However, be careful: the latter title is available twice on CD; you need to buy the Prestige edition. There is indeed also a 'Mating Call' released by Zyx Music containing tracks by Irving Berlin, Sonny Rollins, Cole Porter, Tadd Cameron and T. Monk covered by 'Trane' and already present on other albums. A nice collection, sure, but it's not the one that might interest collectors.
John Coltrane A Love Supreme - DELUXE Edition
Voto:
Essential disc.
Turin Brakes Jack In A Box
Voto:
It's the New Acoustic Movement (folk-pop?) like Dakota Suite and Arab Strap. Alright, no masterpieces from that side, but they create some pleasant songs. (Actually, they used to, since all these bands are pretty much dead now.) Listen to Dakota's "When Skies Are Grey." Bye!
Avril Lavigne Under My Skin
Voto:
mi-ti-ca (the review, I mean)
Billy Bragg & Wilco Mermaid Avenue
Voto:
A cataclysm: as a duo, Bragg and the Chicago band Wilco work surprisingly well (before listening, I was skeptical). Wilco remain true to themselves: a purely "down-to-earth" rock, rustic enough. It's Billy Bragg who, in my opinion, makes a real leap in quality here. And Vol. 2 reinforces this impression of mine.
Jerry Lee Lewis Last Man Standing
Voto:
I bought it because J. Lee Lewis is J. Lee Lewis, but also for the presence of Neil Young – and I have no regrets! It’s a truly enjoyable album. Regarding the voice that "The Killer" has today, I believe it reveals a bit of age, but above all a life that is simply "debauched." However, despite his 71 years, Lewis is still on the "bright" side of existence, and thus at the opposite end of a Johnny Cash who wandered through the "dark side." Dixit.
Francesco Guccini Due anni dopo
Voto:
Absolutely agree with odradek. (See the first comment on the list.)
Francesco Guccini L'isola non trovata
Voto:
I listen to "Asia" again, close my eyes, and travel...
Francesco Guccini Fra la via Emilia e il West
Voto:
I don't agree that Guccini's songs are better live... I mean: not when listening to them on record. (At a concert, it's a whole other story!) However, in front of such a showcase of timeless titles, I feel the urge to dust off the old double vinyl and put it back on the turntable. No, Guccio's music doesn’t make me want to raise my fist (that’s not what Our Man wants!), but rather to pop open a nice bottle of red.
Francesco Guccini Radici
Voto:
Seven songs, seven pearls. Excellent melodies (this is for those who complain about the lack of music... just ask the fans of Leonard Cohen!), and as for the lyrics... well, we are in the presence of one of Italy's greatest modern poets.
