Porcupine Tree Deadwing

Despite being a die-hard fan of PT, I won’t be reviewing any of their CDs! Why? Simple, I wouldn’t be objective. But a warning... be careful when reviewing Sky because that is a masterpiece! :)

Stupid Dream is a great album on par with Lightbulb Sun (perhaps the most accessible) where in the latter resides the wonderful suite Russia on Ice (which alone is worth the purchase). I like Deadwing a bit more than In Absentia; it includes several suites and atrocious commercial misfires (Swallow, Lazzarus) created specifically to gather fans. The true soul of the PT, however, has to be sought in their origins. To conclude: Coma Divine (double); Sky Moves Sideways; Signify; Recordings and then you decide :)

I do not agree with Gianluca. In Absentia is not a masterpiece, rather a pseudo flop when considering the group's entire discography. IA has some truly fantastic tracks in terms of sound and quality but the CD bends too much towards the US market...it does so with quality, though. The masterpiece of the porcupines is undoubtedly Sky moves sideways, to which I would add Signify. If you want to get a sense of the glories of the past, then buy Coma Divine (the double CD) with your eyes closed, and here I agree with Gianluca. If you want to listen to their improvisational fantasy, then turn to Metanoia (an entirely improvised album). Recordings and Down th upsters are also very nice. The new PT have become a bit more commercial compared to the past, but they do it with frightening class.

I fully agree, Andrea. Right now, I’ve decided to focus on quality Italian music, and there are people, far from the titles of commendatori della musica italiana (ergo Ramazzotti), who produce records of TRUE value. Can I recommend something? 1) stereokimono with the album "prismosfera" 2) Finisterre "la meccanica naturale" 3) Anatrofobia "tesa musica marginale" 4) A piedi nudi "eclissi" 5) IV Luna "d'incanto" 6) Nosound "sol 29" 7) sig v "strani sogni"...etc etc. Check out my account where you’ll find samples and reviews of Italian bands. Excellent direction, Andrea... really excellent. :)

Hi Edza, try listening to "a piedi nudi" with the album Eclissi. If you like some very intense prog in Italian...well...you might enjoy them. :)
David Gilmour On An Island

To respond to Shine: the songs you mention are not solely credited to Gilmour, and specifically:
1) Dogs (Waters, Gilmour) 2) Comfortably Numb (Waters, Gilmour) 3) Wish You Were Here (Waters, Gilmour) 4) Shine On You Crazy Diamond....part 1 (Waters, Wright, Gilmour); part 2 (Gilmour, Waters, Wright); part 3 (Waters, Gilmour, Wright); part 4 (Gilmour, Waters, Wright); part 5 (Waters) 5) Time (Mason, Waters, Wright, Gilmour) 6) Run Like Hell (Gilmour, Waters).
I don't believe Gilmour can claim sole authorship of a collaborative work. On all occasions, he's at least assisted by Waters... none of the mentioned songs can be considered entirely his. Otherwise, great review. I still have to savor the album.

Great job! I love it when people get motivated to seek out that handcrafted music away from the spotlight and the market! This pioneering spirit rewards you, Andrea. It’s a shame the album isn’t sung in Italian! It's a pity that one always has to rely on English in the hope of being appreciated at least abroad. Good review and nice tip. Bye.

But you know, Gemma, being eliminated from San Remo is equivalent to being imaginative. San Remo is a showcase for major labels... the fact that they went to San Remo makes me wrinkle my nose. Just for the record, know that there's a label in Italy producing records by really interesting Italian authors, the label is L'immaginifica. Try listening to "La meccanica naturale" by Finisterre or "Prismosfera" by Stereokimono... truly spectacular albums! Also, if you feel like it, take a "look" at "Eclissi" by A Piedi Nudi, which is a very interesting album, well-played and with a lot, but a lot of class. A kiss.
Claudio Baglioni Tutti qui (disc. 1)

Poorly written review, forgive me for the harsh critique. The ending is nothing short of incomprehensible and ungrammatical. The emotional pull of the review doesn’t ignite the reader… honestly, it seems more like a tribute to Baglioni just for the sake of it. Furthermore, allow me to say that calling him a cornerstone of Italian music is a strong statement. B is a singer-songwriter with decent lyrics (perhaps at the beginning) and not much more. One of those who knows how to "trade" with his ideas (this album is an example of that... a commercial operation) and who embraces a San Remo-style song idea that undoubtedly resonates, but which can hardly be compared to that Latin soul of Battisti who shouted to the world that Italy has ideas to sell. Baglioni is commercial pop with good lyrics and a lot of shouting… nothing more, though. :)

..."a work capable of unleashing emotions rarely found in a rock album produced in our country"... This is where I strongly disagree with you to the point of thinking that you don't make enough of an effort in searching for quality music in Italy. Of course, if you are referring to Tozzi, Ramazzotti, Pausini, and Ligabue, I can't argue with you... but to express such a judgment, you should at least be familiar with the entire Italian music landscape. There is a lot of quality in Italy, but it's often not very visible. Please, let’s debunk this myth that Italian music is synonymous with crap! With affection.
