Rating: After three years of silence, absent since the millionaire White Pony of 2000, the band led by the charismatic Chino Moreno has returned with a work that has the taste of reaffirmation.
Indeed, Deftones will not gain new admirers for the band but will tend to reaffirm the new direction taken by them, away from the fury of Adrenaline and Around The Fur, towards more melodic displays.
That said, I believe it is a great album, hard to impact, where Stef Carpenter's guitar alternates furious riffs with very soft parts, highlighting the more introspective aspect, supported by the always precise bass grooves of Chi Cheng and the drums of Abe Cunningham, the true strong point for the group's sound with its tight and powerful rhythms.
With these premises, Chino Moreno keeps the upper hand with his emphatic voice but at the same time capable of unleashing unheard-of anger as in Hexagram or the devastating When Girls Telephone Boys, reminiscent of the early days, but also in the melodic Minerva, the first single, where the singer prophetically sings "And God bless you all for the song you save us".
The true masterpiece of this album is certainly Deathblow, a track that starts with a subdued Chino under a guitar accompaniment, then grows as the track progresses to reach heights of high class from all the members.
Also noteworthy are Bloody Cape, Lucky You, and the beautiful Needles And Pins.
In short, a great album for the pioneers, along with Korn, of nu metal that tends to propose the Deftones in the Olympus of new rock.

This is the Deftones' album. Stretched and lacerating atmospheres, peaceful but haunted by Chino Moreno's wonderful voice, and suddenly explosions of rage and shouted violence sucked from the darkest chasms of the soul.
They are a cut above everyone else... Truly another story...

With Deftones, Chino Moreno and company succeed in the difficult task of fusing musical ideas very close to early Cure with a metalcore brutality that has no comparison in today’s alternative scene.
We are faced with pure musical art, and indeed it could not be otherwise, given that we are talking about the Deftones.
