The discreet comeback that is not so quiet after all, the Punk genre is making its way into the Italy that never sleeps.
Punk music was born out of frustration with mainstream culture and became an outlet for young people who wanted to express themselves.
Overlooked for years, it is now making itself heard (loudly, indeed), in the name of rebellion and free thought, Punk Rock re-emerges in the speakers of those clubs that, with a keen eye, were the first to sniff out a comeback wave for this crazy, expressive, and above all anarchic genre. Have you ever heard of the Circus Punk?
Punk music has existed since the '50s, but its popularity exploded in the '70s. Do you remember the famous punk movements in the UK also interpreted in the fashion sector by the iconic Vivien Westwood?
Punk is pure chaos, an unforgiving sound that you either understand or reject, but once you get to know it, you never let it go.
I woke up one November morning with the idea of doing absolutely nothing, and as I opened my usual Instagram channel, browsing through the new reels so popular among digital creators, I stumbled upon an IG reel that prominently displayed the band's name in red. Without realizing it, I found out it was published during a live show that I later learned was on the stage of the Rock Targato Italia 2021 contest. The sound starting from the drums and accompanied by electric strings rhythmically entered my ears, giving me an adrenaline rush I didn't expect to feel.
Such a crazy creative and Punk morning I really didn't expect. Energy and the desire to play oozing from the skin without thinking about where you are, who you are, and what you do, and to hell with the rest... Circus Punk. There they are. There are two of them, him on the drums and her, fiercely female, almost breaking the strings of her electric guitar with all her crazy energy on the stage of a contest they didn't even expect to win.
CIRCUS PUNK are now an iconic duo, composed of Arianna Muttoni and Antonio Squillante, born in Brianza.
The debut EP "Fuori Tutto", was released in digital distribution on January 14 (self-produced), (obviously because punk doesn't announce itself).
The first single released is titled "Salutami i tuoi". And hello thereeeee
I listen and become more interested in their musical line, and I notice that this EP adds a pinch of amused sarcasm to the tracks listened to. I grab the PC and click play on Spotify on the first single of the EP, looking for that sound seen in the reel that had so revolutionized my day. It comes from the song "Messico", and so I also learn about the singer Arianna's sliding and scratching vocal cords, reminding me of her incredible attitude together with her guitar, on that stage, she and Antonio, the drummer, the two of them. A single entity, their sound so interpreted.
Another song is titled "Signor dottore", and from there the play started, sweet with some evening blues riffs under the moonlight, imagining an alternative way to ask for an appointment with my GP and to complain sweetly but angrily. The guitar sound is a pleasant surprise, especially due to the accompaniment of chords and drum sounds, being a duo perfectly merged into an absurd and rather adrenaline-fueled verve. Melancholy and pain sung in the face of a healthy malaise of life.
Perhaps it's true, it takes little for me to appreciate a great sound, because music moves me regardless, period. But playing a genre so melodically uncatchy at times yet absurdly divine, I don't believe is such a kid's game.
True, the UK-made punk rock will probably be timeless and unsurpassed, but other former times I justify them.
From their RockIt profile, it reads: Take punk, pair it with blues, rock, and shake it with grunge and stoner: these are the CIRCUS PUNK. Raw, gritty sound, guitar, and drums in a unique and rare intertwine with no stories. Decidedly angry and shouted lyrics, the two musicians spit everything out against an infamous and deceitful society.
And so they rebel, they don't comply with everything that's said, taught, indoctrinated, and they try to be as clear-headed as possible about what's happening around.
In the age of control and manipulation, one must wake up, even if the temptation might be to leave and disappear from the circulation, from the chaos, from the noises of a frenzied society, from the "roadblocks around every corner." Head held high, sometimes so high it gets lost in dreamy thoughts, high not in terms of arrogance nor challenge but of solidity and security – says the band – Head held high to say "brainwashing, no thank you."
"From Brianza in the name of rock & roll / punk", that's all.
