Legendary 70s British rock band, Bad Company are recognized as the inventors of AOR. Formed in 1974, the lineup at the time (and still today) was full of promise: lead vocals by Paul Rodgers and drums by Simon Kirke, both former members of Free, a hard blues band known for the famous “All Right Now”. On guitar, former Mott The Hoople member Mick Ralphs, and on bass Boz Burrell, who had just left King Crimson under Fripp. The name of the band came to Paul Rodgers while he was watching an old Western movie one night, titled Bad Company.
The group created six albums with this historic lineup and can still boast many songs that reached the top of the charts and are recognized worldwide, such as “Can’t Get Enough”, “Bad Company”, “Rock’n’Roll Fantasy”, “Shooting Star”, and “Feel like makin’ Love” among others.
This album is the first, released in 1974, and opens with “Can’t Get Enough”, which climbed the American charts even before the album's release. The track is cheerful and direct, yet aggressive, almost seeming improvised. The first hints of AOR are already audible: this is a typically easy-to-listen-to song that makes you want to crank up the volume to the max. “Rock Steady” is the second track, also very cheerful with hard influences, an anthem to music that becomes a staple in concert setlists. The album continues with the touching and positive “Ready For Love,” a song that conveys great emotions, made so by the piano played by Ralphs, especially in the simple but fitting one-handed solo. “Don’t Let Me Down”, reminds a lot of the Beatles' namesake song; here Rodgers is accompanied by female backing vocals in the chorus, often present in Bad Co songs, and by Mel Collins’ saxophone (also a member of King Crimson) which replaces the guitar solo.
The masterpiece of the album, however, is “Bad Company”, an intense mix of highs and lows, a play between piano (this time played by Rodgers) and the rest of the instruments, keeping you on the edge of your seat until the last second of the song. The musicians give their best, from Rodgers’ intense vocal interpretation to Ralphs’ colorful guitar interventions. Following is the song “The Way I Choose”, an appreciable slow piece, notable for Ralphs’ melodic solo, Rodgers’ reverberating voice, and the accents Burrell adds with his fretless bass to enrich the melody. Again, Mel Collins’ horns are present. “Movin’ On” speaks of the frenzy, almost palpable in the rhythm of the track, of a musician who never stops and moves from city to city every day. Simon Kirke provides a good interpretation, coloring the track with cymbals, with direct simplicity yet refined. The closing track, “Seagull”, is an acoustic song, entirely written, sung, and played by Paul Rodgers, who drew inspiration for the track while sitting on the beaches of England, intrigued by the seagulls hovering over the sea. The track is another icon present in concerts, where Rodgers remained alone on stage with his acoustic guitar and microphone, almost restating his undisputed role as leader.
The end of the album couldn’t have been more spot-on, as it leaves a sense of peace and tranquility without regrets. “Bad Co” was a glaring success, a true launchpad: at the start of the American tour, the album was at ninety-ninth place on the charts, and just two months later, it reached number one. Moreover, the group received six platinum records for this masterpiece.
Well I take whatever I want
And baby, I want you
You give me something I need
Now tell me I got something for you
Come on, come on, come on and do it
Come on, and do what you do
I can't get enough of your love
I can't get enough of your love
I can't get enough of your love
Well it's late, and I want love
Love that's gonna break me in two
Don't hang me up in your doorway
Don't hang me up like you do
Come on, come on, come on and do it
Come on, and do what you do
I can't get enough of your love
I can't get enough of your love
I can't get enough of your love
Company, always on the run
Destiny is a rising sun
I was born six gun in my hand
Behind the gun I make my final stand
That's why they call me
Bad company, I can't deny
Bad company
Till the day I die
Till the day I die
Till the day I die
Rebel souls, deserters we are called
Chose a gun and threw away the sun
Now these towns, they all know our names
Six gun sound is our claim to fame
I can hear 'em say
Bad company, and I won't deny
Bad, bad company
Till the day I die
Till the day I die
I live my life the way that i choose
I'm satisfied nothing to lose
I dont ask no favor i dont know the reason why
If i dont ask no questions i dont get no lies
Now you give your love tenderly
Every way that you move is closer to me
I dont need nobody to tell me the reason why
If i love only you baby oh no
I'll be satisfied
Baby answer my questions
If you want say hell oh
Baby dont say goodbye
I get up in the morning and it's just another day
Pack up my belongings, I've got to get away.
Jump into a taxi and the time is gettin' tight
I got to keep on movin' I got a show tonight
Mmmm, and I'm movin' on, movin' on from town to town
Movin' on, baby, yeah I'm never touchin' the ground.
Yeah. I check into the ticket desk with half an' hour to go,
Headin' for the boarding gate, I'm feelin' pretty low
Fifteen minutes later, I'm sittin' on my plane
Fastened in my safety belt I'm takin' off again
And I'm movin' on, movin' on from town to town
Movin' on, baby, yeah I'm never touchin' the ground.
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh. Yeah.
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh.
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh.
And I'm movin' on, movin' on from town to town
Movin' on, I can't seem to stop now.
I got to move on, move on from town to town.
I got to move on, I never seem to slow down.
Oh, I got to move on, move on from town to town.
I got to move on, I never seem to slow down.
Seagull, you fly across the horizon
Into the misty morning sun
Nobody asks you where you are going,
Nobody knows where you're from
Here is a man asking the question
Is this really the end of the world?
Seagull, you must have known for a long time
The shape of things to come
Now you fly, through the sky, never asking why,
And you fly all around till somebody shoots you down
Da da da da da da da down.
Mm mm mm mm, mm mm.
Seagull, you fly, across the horizon,
Into the misty morning sun.
Nobody asks you where you are going,
Nobody knows where you are from,
Now you fly through the sky, never asking why,
And you fly all around till somebody, yeah,
Shoots you down. Mm mm, yeah.
Seagull you fly, seagull you fly away.
And you fly away today
And you fly away tomorrow
And you fly away, leave me to
my sorrow.
Mm, mm, mm.
Seagull go and fly, mm, mm, mm,
Fly to your tomorrow, leave me to my sorrow, fly.
