This is how the new, highly anticipated album by the British band Anathema opens. After the difficulties encountered with various record labels, seven years after the last A natural disaster, they managed to release this new album, thanks also to the help of Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree. The result is a brighter work compared to the past but no less intense and intimate. A hymn to love, to life, to the sense of freedom while at the same time tied to that sense of melancholy and introspection. These are the main themes that emerge from the lyrics.
The first track Thin Air introduces us to the album with a crescendo of instrumental and vocal intensity. In the second track Summernight Horizon, keyboards and hypnotic-sounding drums mark one of the best tracks of the album. The next three tracks Dreaming Light, Everything and Angels walk among us are part of what is the more intimate part of the album. Dominating more than the musical technique is definitely the deep, intense, sometimes almost moved voice of Vincent Cavanagh as he sings to a new life, to love that becomes energy between two people, and to the memory of someone through the constant presence of an angel.
Presence represents a beautiful interlude that leads us into the second part of the album characterized by longer songs and a more prog sound. What strikes especially, more than A simple mistake, is the eighth track Get off Get out, faster than the rest of the album and in many ways reminiscent of that post-rock sound of the '90s. They are followed by Universal and Hindsight, two majestic tracks, mostly instrumental, in which Floydian echoes are clearly perceived. The more prog soul of the band finds its fullest expression in these last two tracks and marks the conclusion of this long-awaited album that certainly did not disappoint expectations even though it is slightly different from the previous works of this band that so deserves and hopes not to keep us waiting another seven years for a new work.
